Frequently Asked Questions

Any questions? vorteil-io@googlegroups.com

Q: Is Vorteil OS a derivative of Linux?
A: Unlike other unikernel/microservice kernel approaches, we did not take the Linux kernel and try to cut it down to fit the microservices approach.
Vorteil OS is a completely new operating system written from scratch.

Q: Is Vorteil OS a Unikernel?
A: Vorteil OS is not a Unikernel, but is a multi-processor OS created based on the Unikernel/Microkernel concept with applications running in ring 0.

Q: What hypervisors does VCLI and VMS support?
A: The following hypervisors are supported on desktop workstations:

  • Linux: KVM, VirtualBox
  • Windows: VirtualBox, VMware Player/Workstation
  • Mac OS: VirtualBox, VMware Fusion
The following cloud platforms are supported:
  • Google Cloud Platform
  • VMware vSphere
Support for AWS, Microsoft Azure, and other public cloud providers is coming soon.

Q: Can I run my existing applications in Vorteil OS?
A: Vorteil OS is not a replacement for Linux or Windows for existing monolithic applications,
it's designed for the next generation of applications that are purposely written to function in a unikernel/containered/microservices architecture.
If your existing application can run in containers, it's potentially already a great fit to run under Vorteil.

Q: Does Vorteil OS allow forking?
A: Vorteil OS runs as a single-process kernel, so there is no need for it to support forking.

Q: Is Voteil OS multithreaded?
A: Vorteil OS supports multi-threaded applications.

Q: Does Vorteil OS allow dynamic linking of libraries?
A: We are working on a dynamic linker at the moment and it should be available soon.
